Vintage Notes 2009
added on 8/01/10
This year presented us with a variety of challenges and rewards in the vineyard and cellar. The vines began flowering on May 22nd and due to an extended period of cold, rain and wind, flowering proceeded slowly and unevenly over three weeks, leading to reduced yields at harvest. We also faced a few worried weeks in July when rainy and warm weather brought perfect conditions for oidium and peronospora. During August and the first two months of harvest, the weather was hot and dry, contributing to optimal sugar levels and ripeness, also as it turned out, very little botrytis! Harvest began on the 14th of September and ended with the last botrytis berries for Ausbruch gathered on November 13th. Although the quantity of some varietals and Ausbruch is less this vintage, the quality is exceptional, with the new wines showing rich aromas and balanced fruit, minerality and acidity. The vintage is still young and we wait patiently to see how things develop in the next months. Best wishes in 2010!

The Reds!
added on 20/08/08
The first red wines of the 2007 vintage have been bottled. This year's Junge Löwen is a blend of Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt and Cabernet Sauvignon; youthful and at the same time powerful, spicy with plenty of fruit. Our Zweigelt vom Berg is a dark ruby red with fine spice, depth and character. The grapes for this wine come from the vineyards Ruster and Plachen, higher up in the hills of Rust, where the soils are optimal for this varietal. Formerly we offered a Zweigelt from the Kräftn vineyard. We treasure the good memories of this expressive wine, but times do change and we have now cleared and newly planted the vineyard with Grauburgunder vines.
